Playing poker can mean learning a whole new language.

 

Becoming familiar with the current poker jargon and terminology can help players understand the definitions behind many poker terms.

 

Poker table talk and poker terms uttered around the table can really confuse some poker players so it pays to learn the common poker terms and what they mean.

 

While poker jargon continues to change and grow, the following explanations of common poker terms with help to educate all  poker players, especially players new to the game.

 

Action: This is the betting amounts in the game. Hands with lots of action generally indicate a significant amount of bets and raises.


Bad Beat: A weaker hand beats the better starting hand.


Bang Away: This is used to describe more aggressive bets by players attempting to build the pot or eliminate opponents.


Belly Buster: Is simply an inside straight draw.


Board: This is what the cards are dealt face up. The community cards in Texas Hold’em are commonly known to as the “board”, yet in seven-stud it means the cards that face up.


Boat: This is a hand containing a “Full house” is called.


Bring-in: Is a forced bet made with either a low or high card in a stud game and is used to start of the first round of betting.


Bubble: This is the time in a tournament when the next player out will not win any money, though the remaining players all win money.


Button: This is the small round disk that the dealer moves from player to player after each hand.


Busted draw: This is when a draw hand does not hit or complete.


Button: This refers to the player sitting directly right of the big blind, and will be the last player to bet in the hand.


Buy-in: This simply means the fee requirement to play at a table.


Calling Station: Refers to a player who calls nearly every hand but hardly ever raises or folds.


Come Hand: Other words for “draw hand. “


Chip: Plastic or clay pieces used in place of real money at the poker table.


Chopped Pot: When blinds are given back to the players and they continue on to the next hand when no other players call.  Is can also be referred to as “split the pot”.


Connectors: Starting hands in hold’em where the two cards rank one apart.


Cracked: A superior hand that is drawn out on and beaten.


Donkey: An inferior player who makes dumb moves.


Fish: A weak player.


Gut Shot Draw: Inside straight draw.


Heads Up: A pot that is being played for by only two players.


Hole Cards: Cards that are dealt face to each player.


Kicker: Cards held along with the made hand.


Lay Down: When a player folds a solid hand. When he believes he is beat.


Limit: Maximum bet in a round.


Limp in: Calling the minimum to get to the next round instead of raising.


Made Hand: A good hand that does not require much building for a good chance to win.


Muck: When a player folds.


Outs: Cards that will finish building your hand.


Overcard: Simply means a community card or flop cards.


Play the Board: When a player attempts to slow down a hand when better cards aren’t coming than what is displayed on the board.


Porch: Is a term used in stud games that means the cards facing up in players hands.


Pot: The total amount of money in a hand to be won.


Quads: Is a four of a kind.


Rags: A bad hand with useless cards.


Rainbow: Is a flop with three separate suits, no potential of a flush. Also can be a five card board does not have more than two of any given suit.


Rake: The percentage of the pot that the house takes.


Re-Buy: The total amount of money players must pay to add a specific amount of chips to their stack in tournaments.


River: The last card dealt in all games. (Also often referred to the``5th`street.


Rock: A passive player.


Satellite: A mini-tournament held to qualify player’s entrance into bigger tournaments.


Set: When a player has a pair in his hand that matches a card on the board.


Shark: A bit of a hustler, plays like a fish then suddenly plays like a pro.


Shoot-out: A tournament that does not offer re-buys. (Also known as a `freeze out`).


Short Stack: Players with very little chips left on the table.


Side Pot: A pot that is made when a player goes ``all-in`.


Stealing: Winning a hand by bluffing.


Straddle: This is a blind bet that is generally double the size of the Big Blind.


Suckout: A term used to describe a player who draws out other players.


Tight: This is a player who plays very few pots. In other words, a game without much action.


Tilt-On: A poor loser.


Trips: A three of a kind.


Turn: The 4th community card on the board.


Wired Pair: A hidden pair.
